Our mission
Research and development contributes to the academic discourse on education, schools and teaching, adding to the disciplinary development of the knowledge base for the teaching professions. This sparks inspiration and lays foundations that are key to the ongoing development of the teaching profession, school environment and educational institutions.
The Office the Vice-Rector for Research & Development has overall responsibility for the strategic direction and development of the office, quality management, communication, coordination of research projects, coordination of partnerships with schools and education partners, and funding for research.

What we do
The employees working in research and development action the strategic goals of the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research & Development and provide a wide range of services that can be categorised under four key areas:
- Generating new scientific knowledge: research comes together in the form of research projects. New subject-specific information and research methodologies are discovered, the scope of existing knowledge is tested and new developments are made.
- Communicating and sharing new knowledge: it would not be possible to keep building on knowledge without the results of ongoing research being published. Guided by the principle of building a link between research and teaching at universities, teaching is used as one of the main ways of communicating research results to students as a key audience.
- Creating and maintaining structures for knowledge exchange: being involved in creating and maintaining structures that are used for knowledge exchange is another important responsibility. Examples of this work include organising academic conferences and panels, holding positions within professional organisations and publishing specialist journals.
- Supporting junior researchers: there is a strong link between junior researchers who need support and research being conducted as part of qualifications. This is true at PH Zurich even though the university does not have the right to confer PhDs. Partnerships with other universities that do have the right to confer PhDs are important in this respect.
