Teachers at lower secondary level teach young people in Years 7 to 9 with different levels of requirements. The profession requires a great deal of specialist knowledge and in-depth expertise in knowledge transfer.

Secondary I education (lower secondary school) in Switzerland spans three years and pupils are divided into different ability groups. They deepen and broaden the skills they have acquired at primary school and prepare for an apprenticeship or upper secondary school.

Secondary I education teachers are qualified to teach a specific number of subjects (currently four) at the different skill levels.

The Lower Secondary Degree Programme can be completed full-time or part-time. A course of study is also available for students who are changing careers.

Teaching diploma Teaching diploma in secondary I education, valid in all secondary schools that offer this level (except grammar schools (“Gymnasia”)) throughout Switzerland
Teaching authorisation Class teaching diploma including accreditation to teach the four subjects selected
Subjects taught Four subjects to be selected in accordance with the current guidelines
Two examples of subject selection:
Example 1: Mathematics; Science and technology; Spaces, times, societies; Physical education
Example 2: German; English; Textile and technical crafts; Ethics, religious studies, communities
Academic training for most subjects (except Art, Sport, Handicrafts) takes place at the University of Zurich.

Please note

Candidates who have not obtained the recognised secondary II education certificate at a German-speaking school, which is required for admission, must provide a C2 certificate (Goethe Certificate or language examination for pedagogical professions of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW)) in order to study at PH Zurich.
