PH Zurich often advertises doctoral positions within the context of research projects, usually funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). Employees at PH Zurich can also apply to drop their own workload by 20 per cent through an internal doctoral sponsorship programme so that they can work on their projects to achieve their own qualifications.
Doctoral students at PH Zurich are generally supervised jointly by professors from PH Zurich and the universities authorised to award doctorates at which they are enrolled.
Many doctoral students are working on their own research projects at PH Zurich. Not only do they benefit from close exchange within PH Zurich’s research networks, but they also have plenty of other support available to them.
- The PH Zurich Methodology Office provides methodological guidance and support for quantitative and qualitative empirical work in educational, social and cultural research. It also organises the annual Methodology School, during which various workshops on methods from the social sciences take place.
- Doctoral students can present their work and find out more about ongoing research projects at PH Zurich at a research colloquium run by the university.
- In the doctoral forum, doctoral students have the opportunity to present and discuss various topics and issues from their doctoral projects in a plenum of doctoral students.
- Doctoral students can apply for funding, which they can use to attend a conference, buy materials they need for their project and so on.
- The doknetz doctoral network offers numerous opportunities to network with other doctoral students. Anyone working on a doctoral project at PH Zurich is welcome to join. There are regular meetings for members of the network. Workshops with a methodological, theoretical or practical focus are organised in response to what members need.
Doctoral students at PH Zurich can pursue their doctoral project with or without affiliation to one of four doctoral programmes or doctoral colleges. The programmes and colleges are collaborations with universities in Switzerland and abroad that are authorised to award doctorates. They offer structured training and support opportunities as well as opportunities to network with relevant peers and experts from the respective research fields.
