PH Zurich assumes social responsibility through its diverse educational activities. It actively shapes the education system and offers a vibrant environment for teaching and learning – one that’s scientific, practice-based and has a great network.
Life is full of questions. As Switzerland’s largest teacher training university, PH Zurich offers space to engage, find answers and support lifelong learning.

The Zurich University of Teacher Education (PH Zurich) is the largest university of teacher education in Switzerland with over 3900 students, around 19’500 continuing education participants each year and 940 employees.

It’s located in the centre of the city of Zurich, in the heart of a nationally and internationally distinguished science and education hub that’s home to several universities and universities of applied sciences.

PH Zurich trains teachers at all levels, from pre-primary and lower primary to vocational school. The degree programmes prepare teachers in training for their practical work in schools and the classroom, and correspond to the latest state of the art in academic disciplines, educational and social sciences.

As the demands on education and its institutions are constantly changing, PH Zurich supports teachers and heads of primary schools, secondary schools, vocational schools and universities, as well as other people involved in the field of education, with a comprehensive range of continuing education courses.

With its wide array of services, PH Zurich supports school development projects, develops new teaching materials, and advises institutions and teachers when they need additional expertise.

Applied research and development projects are PH Zurich’s fourth area of activity. Essential foundations are being laid here for innovations in education, schools and teaching, and for the teaching and learning of the future.

With its wide range of activities, the PH Zurich contributes to ensuring that teachers and educational stakeholders can carry out their work effectively and that all students can learn in a stimulating and healthy environment. Andrea Schweizer, Rector PH Zurich

A vibrant environment for teaching and learning

PH Zurich was founded in autumn 2002 and was created by merging its 11 predecessor institutions of teacher education. In 2012, the entire university moved to the campus on Europaallee, right next to Zurich’s main railway station (Hauptbahnhof). The four modern high-rise buildings on the campus are all within a few steps of each other and offer an ideal teaching and learning environment with lecture and seminar rooms, group and individual workplaces as well as numerous places to grab a bite to eat.

A socially engaged university with a vast network

As a university for the teaching professions, PH Zurich faces up to the challenges of society and tasks itself with addressing these accordingly. Within the scope of its activities, it sets various thematic priorities and realises both university-wide and inter-university projects and programmes.

An engaging exchange with experts from educational practice, policy and research is essential for the activities and further development of PH Zurich, and ensures that its services are up-to-date and of top quality.

PH Zurich therefore promotes networking and knowledge transfer both within the university and in the local, national and international educational environment.

A respectful and progressive employer

Almost 600 people work in teaching and research, nearly 50 professors and almost 300 employees in administrative, technical and operational functions in three Vice-President’s Offices, the Administration Office and the PH Zurich President’s Office.

As an employer, the university fosters a culture of trust, mutual respect and appreciation. It provides its employees with an environment that promotes their professional development, accommodates remote and flexible working, and supports their work-life balance.
