Employees within research and development conduct practice-related educational research. In doing so, they make a relevant contribution to laying a research-based foundation for teacher education and help promote a nuanced and evidence-based discourse on education, schooling and teaching.

In its projects, research and development explores a wide range of topics at the interface between educational research and educational practice. The research projects contribute to the further development of school and teaching practice at all levels of education and to the further professionalisation of school change and teaching professions. Researchers at PH Zurich boast broad national and international networks and solicit extensive third-party financing from public and private funding organisations and state institutions.

Research and development pursues close collaboration with other areas of the university, thus ensuring that the latest research is applied to training and continuing education and that services provided to educational institutions are backed by science. In turn, experience from teaching and service provision is systematically incorporated into research and development activities.

Research and development (R&D) harnesses academic expertise in many ways – even beyond the university – for application in local and regional contexts: whether through systematic reflection on pedagogical practice, applied research on optimising the effectiveness of education systems or commissioned and evaluation-based research to support decision-making.
