Subject-specific education is the science of subject-specific teaching and learning inside and outside of the school environment. Research into subject-specific education focuses on the subject-specific requirements of teaching and learning in a particular field. It deals with the selection, legitimation and pedagogical reconstruction of learning objects, the definition and justification of teaching objectives, the methodical structuring of learning processes and the appropriate consideration of the psychological and social starting situation of teachers and students. It also deals with the professionalisation of teachers in training and further education and the development and evaluation of teaching and learning materials.

With the collaborative doctoral programme in subject-specific education – supported by five universities of teacher education and the University of Zurich – the participating partner universities offer academic qualifications in subject-specific education at the doctoral level. Doctoral studies are supervised by professors from the participating universities of teacher education and the University of Zurich who are highly qualified in subject-specific education. The programme also offers an attractive range of modules tailored to the needs of doctoral students and supports their networking in the scientific community.

The doctoral programme ideally follows a master’s programme in subject-specific education, but is aimed at lecturers and researchers with different backgrounds. Accordingly, differentiated career paths and individual professional strengths are recognised, taking into account consistent training structures. The doctorate in subject-specific education offers exciting and diverse career opportunities in lectureships and professorships at universities, universities of teacher education, in academia, at publishers and at private and public foundations.
