Description

All-day schools and schools with all-day facilities are increasingly drawing attention and interest in Switzerland. Extra-curricular activities are developed around regular lessons, providing children and adolescents with additional learning opportunities while also enhancing their social and affect-related learning experiences. In principle, school improvement projects endeavour to improve the quality of schools as institutions as well as the quality of teaching, and they consider schools, school networks and educational regions in the context of the entire educational system.

The overarching aim of this project is to design extra-curricular sport and exercise oriented activities that are optimised for a specific setting. Particular interests are: holistic well-being promotion of pupils, with a focus on social inclusion; mental health and motor-skills development; and a corresponding professionalisation of the teachers and support staff involved. Schools with all-day facilities are to be offered practical support in developing and/or expanding their extra-curricular sport and exercise oriented activities; this lays the groundwork for a subsequent analysis of their impact on school improvement (school life and teaching methodologies, well-being of all involved, development of the teaching profession) that takes specific local features into account.

In the context of an inclusive approach to school improvement, the following key questions have been formulated with regard to conducting and evaluating as well as creating and further developing extra-curricular sport and exercise oriented activities at public schools:

  • Which activities are popular at the different school levels and why?
  • How are communications and organisational matters between the different persons involved (external and in-house teachers, school directors and head of support staff) resolved?
  • How do the activities impact the children as individuals (well-being and social inclusion, basic motor skills development)?

In the scope of the project, the possibilities for physical activities and sports at all-day schools and schools with all-day facilities are (further) developed and evaluated in three areas: extra-curricular activities (e.g. open gym, sporting events, free physical activities during recess, active breaks); the design of the school grounds in connection to physical activities and sports (sport and game equipment, design of outdoor surfaces); and organising and conducting specific training and professional development courses for school staff.
