Description

The On-Evol project focuses on the professional knowledge of Swiss teachers so that they can equip future generations of pupils with the ability to make more sustainable decisions on evolutionary issues in their everyday lives. A survey is conducted of curriculum-relevant knowledge on evolution and the acceptance of the theory of evolution among future and current teachers at all levels of compulsory schooling in Switzerland’s three major language regions. The survey results form the basis for designing professional development courses for teaching evolution. In addition to more precise and deeper knowledge of the subject, these training and professional development courses contain subject-specific elements for teaching evolution, in particular for diagnosing pupils’ preconceptions and thus enabling a targeted approach to promoting learner competencies. Upon project completion, a diagnostic tool for teachers is developed to support them in planning and teaching evolution and the theory of evolution.
