Continuing education : Training school leadership at PH Zurich – and in Barcelona
Last autumn, for the first time a module of the Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) in School Leadership at the Zurich University of Teacher Education (PH Zurich) took place at a Swiss school abroad recognised by the federal government. Twenty-one participants of the module School Leadership International travelled to Catalonia for three days to experience firsthand the interlinking of strategic management, intercultural cooperation and pedagogical practice at the Swiss School in Barcelona.
In preparation, Hansjürg Brauchli, lecturer at the Centre for Management and Leadership at PH Zurich who is responsible for the module, provided theoretical insights into various management models and posed targeted questions to encourage reflection on different leadership approaches. In Barcelona, Pascal Affolter, the principal of the Swiss School Barcelona, in turn shared his insights on strategic school management, governance, fundraising, marketing, and communication. Furthermore, Serge Künzler, Director of Educationsuisse, presented an overview of the structure and legal framework of Swiss schools abroad, and explained the role of Educationsuisse as an umbrella organisation.
Education in an international context
The Swiss School in Barcelona provided the ideal setting for this this exchange in an international context. A virtual panel discussion featuring Bettina Huber, co-principal of the Swiss School in Mexico City, and Walter Stooss, principal of the Swiss School in Santiago, , opened up further perspectives. The conversation centred on leadership approaches, intercultural challenges, and differences between school leadership in Switzerland and abroad. The exchange was highly practical and open, characterized by a great deal of personal commitment. The aim of the module is not only to open up new perspectives for the participants, but also to raise awareness of the seventeen Swiss schools in Europe, Asia and Latin America.
A shift in perspective
For many participants, the module offered more than just further training – it also provided a change of perspective. Kilian Imwinkelried, a principal in Opfikon, explained why he wanted to participate: “I was drawn to the international aspect – gaining insight into a different yet related system. That’s how you discover your own blind spots and gain new insights.”
Sarah Lenz, a principal in Gossau, Zurich, also spoke of an enriching experience: “The comparison with the Swiss School in Barcelona was exciting and inspiring. The change in perspective showed me how international experiences can enrich the role of a principal.” Bob Klenk, a career changer and principal in Horgen, highlighted the entrepreneurial spirit of Swiss schools abroad. “I was inspired by the entrepreneurial mindset”, he said. “The scope of responsibility here is significantly greater, and at the same time, the atmosphere is very respectful.”
Julia Ann Stüssi, principal in Stadel, was also impressed by the school’s spirit. “The dynamism and innovative spirit throughout the organization, particularly in community building, were inspiring. I’m taking lots of ideas back to my own school, and I can certainly see myself working at a Swiss school abroad one day.”
Exchange, depth and diversity
In addition to receiving input from specialists, participants gained an authentic insight into life at the Swiss School in Barcelona through classroom visits, shared lunches, and discussions with teaching staff. Participants highlighted the depth of the discussions and the diversity of perspectives. Linda Sulzer, a principal in Zurich, summed up: “The module was extremely enriching in terms of both content and personal development, opening up numerous new perspectives.” Silke Herr, a principal in Rüti, described the module as “full of inspiration and personal growth”.
Following last year’s success, the School Leadership module is running again this year in close collaboration with the Swiss School in Barcelona. It is one of many continuing education offerings at PH Zurich with an international dimension. In addition to continuing education for Swiss teachers and principals, PH Zurich’s Department for International Projects in Education, led by Corinne Pernet, also offers educational opportunities specifically tailored to international target groups.
