Social sciences education at PH Zurich is made up of teaching experts from the fields of history, geography, politics, economics, law, religious studies and ethics. In their projects, the researchers deal with the learning conditions of children, young people and students, with their educational and learning processes, with teaching activities, classroom activities and the professionalisation processes of students. They also look at questions about curricula and teaching/learning materials in relation to educational and learning processes in the social sciences.

Social Sciences Education Research Group:

Research focuses

Social sciences education faces the challenges of a heterogeneous and diverse society. The focus is on the learning conditions, values and norms that children, young people and students studying to become teachers bring with them into the classroom and into placement situations, and regards these as a positive starting point for successful learning and educational processes. It also advances developmental research on educational processes in dealing with material culture and landscapes as well as key developments in extracurricular, socio-scientific learning. This makes a significant contribution to the promotion of pedagogical discourse, in particular to the improvement of social sciences education in schools, extracurricular institutions and teacher training.

Empirical research on patterns of perception, thinking and interpretation

The mental dispositions children have towards historical topics are studied in this thematic focus. The model of educational reconstruction is applied here. Studies are currently available on the French Revolution, the Romanisation of Switzerland and the Holocaust, the findings of which provide the basis for developing teaching/learning materials for the classroom.

Ethical-moral reasoning and judgements

This thematic focus looks at how school students arrive at ethical judgements through perception, reflection, questioning and reasoning. Owing to the introduction of the subject of ethics, it is important to investigate the judgement formation of young children. The resulting findings form the basis for further research on participatory teaching of philosophy with children and the educationally effective, professionally sound design thereof.

Development research on teaching materials and settings

New teaching materials are needed to make schools and the population more aware of socio-scientific issues.

Geographical education using digital tools

The digital transformation requires new pedagogical approaches in schools, universities and adult education. This thematic focus deals with the resulting new requirements for teaching/learning settings. The subject of the research is the integration of digital skills in the training of geography teachers.

Learning in and about landscapes

This research focus explores learning in and about landscapes. School lessons should create an awareness of challenges in dealing with landscapes, enable insight into co-responsibility as well as promote willingness to participate.

Doctoral theses

The History of Political Education in German-speaking Switzerland

Doctoral thesis by: Stefanie Marolf

Topic: This research project examines the development of political education in German-speaking Switzerland between 1945 and 1995, drawing on historical academic journals. The analysis is situated within a literature-based prehistory (1798–1945) and a post-history extending to the present day, in order to highlight long-term continuities, breaks and lines of development over a period of around 200 years.
