Childhood in education and society

Due to social challenges such as (forced) migration, social inequality, the climate crisis and poverty, the experience of childhood in Switzerland is extremely varied. School is both a key locus and defining factor in childhood.
The Centre for Childhood in Education and Society studies these diverse childhoods from a perspective that takes into account inequality and power. Core concepts such as education, culture and difference, and their entanglement with social power relations play a key role here. The researchers involved are doing important work to understand children’s perspectives and opportunities for action in today’s world.
Research focuses
Through qualitative-interpretative research approaches and with an eye to issues of differences and power, researchers in the division and in the centre work on three primary areas: childhood(s), school and society. By interlinking the three primary areas, important knowledge bases for the further development of teacher education, academic debates and education policy are developed.
Childhood(s): different ways of growing up in Switzerland
In this research focus, the various facets of childhood that result from the historical, social and political circumstances in which children grow up are explored. The term childhoods in the plural emphasises the concurrence of different childhoods (for example, family childhood and school childhood), the different phases in an individual’s life (early, middle, late childhood) and the diversity of children’s life circumstances (migration, socio-economic status, rural or urban environments, and so on). The researchers look at, for example, how social crises (climate change, Covid-19 pandemic, wars, domestic violence) influence the way children grow up, how children perceive these crises and how they deal with them.
School: educational and school childhoods
School is analysed as a social institution with central tasks: children should be socialised, educated and trained to become socially capable and responsible people – for example, against the backdrop of the global climate crisis. School is also examined as an organisation that provides the structural framework for shaping everyday coexistence and for developing communities at school. The “school” focus area examines everyday school culture, in particular the different perspectives and actions of children and other school stakeholders, but also the influence of things and spaces.
Schools in society
This area focuses on educational contexts that are permeated by social power relations such as racism, classism, (hetero)sexism and ableism, the intersection of which influences the interpretations and practices of the stakeholders and impacts their scope for action and self-understanding. The projects in this area focus on educational processes in social, institutional and family contexts. It analyses how differences imbued with power contribute to the (re)production of inequalities. The design of career, life and educational paths under these social conditions is also a particular focus here.

Unraveling NatureChildhoods with Young Humans and More-than-humans: Entangled Ethnographic Explorations based on Karen Barad’s Agential Realism
Project name: Unraveling NatureChildhoods with Young Humans and More-than-humans: Entangled Ethnographic Explorations based on Karen Barad’s Agential Realism
Doctoral thesis by: Felizitas Juen
Topic: Following the concept of NatureCultures, my dissertation project deals with NatureChildhoods from a posthumanist/new-materialist perspective. The theoretical background of the dissertation is the work of physicist and philosopher Karen Barad. I ethnographically explore young-humans/more-than-humans’ “intra-actions” in institutional educational settings in German-speaking Switzerland, observing how connections between materialities, atmospheres, animals, plants, and children unfold.

Cooperation initiatives
Räume organisierter Kindheit / Spaces of organised childhood
This research network, born out of a Swiss cooperation between the University of Fribourg and the Centre for Childhood in Education and Society in 2016, now functions as an educational ethnographic network for German-speaking Switzerland and southern Germany. It includes collaborative activities within the scope of conference papers, publication projects and joint research workshops.
The network consists of close cooperation between Bettina Fritzsche from PH Freiburg im Breisgau, Melanie Kuhn from PH Heidelberg, Sascha Neumann from the University of Tübingen, as well as Gisela Unterweger and Anja Sieber Egger from the Centre for Childhood in Education and Society at PH Zurich.
International cooperation network of the BMBF emerging researchers group
Researchers at the Centre for Childhood in Education and Society are part of the international cooperation network of the BMBF emerging researchers group “Continuities and New Formations of Institutional Racism in Schools” (under the responsibility of Anja Steinbach, University of Oldenburg). Other members of the network are the Centre for Race, Education and Decoloniality at Leeds Beckett University in the UK (Vini Lander) and the Centre for Global Learning at Coventry University in the UK (Paul Warmington).
