Description

Social media plays an important role in the everyday lives of young people. However, teachers and carers are faced with the challenge that commercial platforms are not suitable for designing learning scenarios. As part of the project, an Instagram-inspired platform (“Instahub 2.0”) is therefore being developed that meets the requirements for media education lessons at primary schools and in youth work.

Making your own experiences

On the developed platform, pupils can gain experience in dealing with social media in a protected space. Pupils can post photos, write comments, add likes, find friends and much more. Teachers and carers have insight into and control over all processes and can intervene as moderators. As larger networks are also possible, the platform can also be used for extracurricular youth work.

Right to be forgotten

Even if the social network is limited to a school class, there is a risk that young people will publish inappropriate content. To reduce this risk, a teacher can specifically enable and disable interaction options, e.g. whether comments can be written or posts liked. Furthermore, posts can be irrevocably deleted (right to be forgotten). This makes it possible to deal with social media in a targeted and step-by-step manner in lessons or youth work, allowing young people to make their own experiences.

Media education topics

In addition to the possibilities of use as a social network, “Instahub 2.0” can be used to deal with other relevant topics such as personalised advertising, user tracking or recommendation algorithms. Young people can design their own advertising campaigns and have them displayed to selected users. The topic of advertising can be dealt with comprehensively and extended to social media. Further didactic materials and application scenarios for working with young people will be developed and kept up to date beyond the duration of the project.
