Description
The project “Empowering Women and Youth in rural Egypt through Education and Economic Inclusion”, or EYRAD (pronounced īrād, Arabic for income), has the overall goal of empowering women and youth in rural Egypt both socially and economically. Especially in rural areas, women and youth have limited economic opportunities. High levels of school drop-out rates are an additional challenge. The EYRAD project therefore aims to create opportunities for sustainable economic and social integration for this target group. This is done through interventions in two main areas. Firstly, EYRAD strengthens vocational skills in agriculture as well as basic and life skills. Secondly, an agricultural cooperative is being set up to support women and young people in their production processes and to manage marketing, logistics and distribution channels. This cooperative guarantees them long-term market access and payment of fair prices. Finally, the EYRAD project includes a sustainable agriculture component that promotes the reduction of pesticides and synthetic fertilisers. EYRAD thus encompasses economic, social and environmental aspects, thereby strengthening sustainable development in the broadest sense.
The EYRAD project is a collaboration between the Zurich University of Teacher Education (Switzerland), the NGO Life Vision for Development (Egypt) and lecturers from the Faculty of Education at Assiut University (Egypt). It builds on the established expertise and networks of each partner and combines education, vocational training and economic integration. EYRAD is a project of the Department for International Projects in Education and funded by the Community Fund of the Canton of Zurich.
