Description

The project develops and tests teaching materials for the school subject of art education that enable access to art for children in their first years of school. This is to be achieved through dialogue and creative activity. The art selected for the project, expressly expands the traditional Eurocentric art canon. Based on this collection of artworks teaching scenarios are designed, that explicitly try to avoid (re)producing discriminatory conditions in the teaching situation. Accompanying research supports the development and addresses the question of how the materials can be embedded in discrimination-sensitive, racism-critical teaching. “Diversum”, the association for racism-critical thinking, is advising the developers on this question.

The project’s potential for innovation lies in the connection between the topic of “diversity and transcultural understanding” as part of “education for sustainable development” (ESD), that are both central concerns of éducation21 and the “Common European Framework of Reference for Visual Literacy” or Art Education in Curriculum 21. On the other hand, the transformative learning process of all actors involved is an important aspect of the project.
