Teaching professions and continuing professional development

Auch auf Deutsch verfügbar

Teaching professions and continuing professional development is concerned with theory formation, basic research and knowledge transfer, as well as with methodologically challenging research on topics of relevance in teacher education.

Content of this page

Two people are standing in a classroom looking at a book at the same time.

The thematic focus is, among other things, the transformation of the profession against the backdrop of a changing society and – in relation to this – the changing requirements and characteristics of professional conduct. From the decision to study to the retirement of teachers, professionalisation processes are analysed in research papers. They examine how professional thinking and conduct of teachers and educational professionals develop over the course of their career paths. Socialisation in the teaching profession and the development of other educational specialists’ career paths are also taken into account.

The findings lead to the question of how different formats and phases of teacher education can be structured in such a way that it meets the applicable quality criteria and is able to initiate corresponding development processes among teachers.

The Centre for Teaching Professions and Continuing Professional Development (LPP) is thus involved in the academic discourse, acquiring knowledge for reflection and action, which can serve as the basis for further development and the adaptation of continuing education and training programmes on offer at universities of teacher education. The findings from the research projects are also to be made available to schools and their stakeholders in the most cooperative way possible.

Research focuses

The centre’s research on teaching professions and educational professionalism examines the transformation of the profession, as well as the changing characteristics of teacher professionalism in modern society and schools. The interaction of various stakeholders in schools and universities, processes of professional development for (prospective) teachers and the diversity of professional career paths are of central interest in this respect.

Teacher education from the perspective of different stakeholders

Teacher education is examined not only from the perspective of universities of teacher education, but also from that of the various stakeholders in the school environment and public authorities. The aim of the research activities in this focus is to consider the relevant field and sense logics, and to factor in the different perspectives of the stakeholders that support and are responsible for teacher education.

The career paths of teachers from a multi-theoretical perspective

The focus is broadly positioned in terms of its professional-theoretical framework; it takes into account various discourses and career path-related, competence theory-based and habitus theory-based approaches to vocational and professional development in the teaching profession and their respective significance. This also applies to a range of methodological approaches, which are applied depending on their suitability for the respective research question. The projects include reconstructive longitudinal studies using the documentary method as well as quantitative questionnaire studies and mixed-method research design. At the core of the research in this thematic focus is the study of professional career paths, development processes and the reproduction of educational and professional orientation or the skills of (prospective) teachers. It also focuses on unconventional paths into the teaching profession, teachers leaving the profession or changing careers, and the diverse career paths of educational professionals and school leaders.

Teacher professionalism in a changing society

Schools and society are in a constant state of change, and so the demands on teachers and educational activities are also changing. With the abandonment of the socio-occupational concept of professionalism and the shift towards expert status, questions also arise for primary and secondary schools about what sort of profile a (classroom) teacher should have. This is followed by necessary reflections on the redefinition of the dimensions and categories of teaching professionalism. The existing models have gaps in terms of skill descriptions for schools today and for the needs of young people (e.g. with regard to diversity sensitivity and habitus sensitivity). The focus considers itself responsible for taking the lead on this discourse and making proposals in this context.

Doctoral theses

Doctoral thesis by: Tamina Kappeler

Topic: The dissertation project reconstructs training orientations in interactions between practising teachers and prospective teachers in Swiss and Australian teacher training, as well as the way in which these orientations relate to the organisational norms perceived by the actors.

Funded by: Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)

Supervisors: Julia Kosinar (PHZH) and Till-Sebastian Idel (Oldenburg University)

Project name: Habitus in the social realm of pre-school (German-speaking Switzerland) – a qualitative study on the relationship between class habitus and professional habitus of pre-school teachers (working title)

Doctoral thesis by: Sibylle Künzli Kläger

Topic: This dissertation project examines everyday activities in the educational setting of “pre-school” in German-speaking Switzerland, and reconstructs both the classroom habitus and the professional habitus of pre-school teachers.

Supervisors: Helmut Bremer (University of Duisburg-Essen), Katharina Maag Merki, (University of Zurich)

Doctoral thesis by: Simone Meili

Topic: Within the scope of this dissertation project, the interplay of institutional conditions and school, training and career-path experiences – which, according to teachers who have been in the profession for many years, enable or prevent educational processes – is examined.

Cooperation initiatives

Gender:rollen

The Centre supports the platform, which advocates for a childhood without gender barriers and is organised by the Mercator Foundation Switzerland. Three meetings set the course for a strong community of practice and accompanying events offer scope for the development of concrete projects.

Network of the Interdisciplinary Center for Empirical Research on Teachers and Teaching (IZeF) at the University of Cologne

The aim of this network is to promote networking among academics, to stimulate new collaborations and strengthen existing ones. The IZeF network supports cooperation between the participating research and teaching areas of educational research at the University of Cologne and beyond.

Bilateral research colloquium on teacher professionalisation

Since 2015, one or two colloquia have been held annually under joint responsibility and in joint coordination between academic staff, doctoral students from the Faculty of Education at the University of Hamburg (Professor Angelika Paseka, Professor Dagmar Killus) and Professor Julia Košinár’s research team. The meetings focus on a specific topic (theoretical or methodological) and are supported by guest experts.

International research workshop on professionalisation research using the documentary method

Since 2014, this research workshop has taken place among a network of professional researchers from various Swiss universities (e.g. PHZH, PH FHNW, PH St.Gallen, HFH, UZH), with researchers from German universities also participating on an irregular basis. During the workshop, current data (interviews, videos, photograms, group discussions) from the participants’ research projects is jointly evaluated and thus validated through communication.

International PhD candidates’ colloquium (collaboration between PHZH and University of Oldenburg)

The international PhD candidates’ colloquium takes place twice a year and enables the doctoral students of Professor Till-Sebastian Idel and Professor Julia Košinár to present their projects and discuss their concerns.
