Educational and school history looks at change and continuity in education and the teaching profession from a historical perspective.

The aim of the activities of educational and school history is to acquire knowledge based on the history of education. It seeks to help with the critical and analytical evaluation of social traditions, expectations and dynamics in schools and extracurricular fields. The research focuses on various historical insights and practices in teacher education, the transformation of educational knowledge within and beyond the school context, institutional transformations and ambitions for educationalisation.

The research activities in the field of educational history follow a cultural, history-of-knowledge and praxeological perspective. Projects relating to the collection items of the Pestalozzianum Research Library at PH Zurich are of particular importance. These partly unique items enable a historical analysis of various developments in pedagogically relevant fields of practice and of social negotiations on (extra)curricular educational sciences.

The activities in this field are carried out by the Centre for School History, which bundles research into the history of education at PH Zurich.

Research focuses

School history is currently concerned with the history of teacher training, the history of individual school subjects, sociotechnological designs in pedagogy in terms of perceptions of crises, educational reforms and sociocultural knowledge.

Historical practices and knowledge circulation in teacher education

In this research focus, special attention is paid to knowledge circulation and interlinking practice between institutionalised teacher education and social movements during what is known as the educational expansion. Thus, in the history of teacher education, the focus is on the emergence of different insights and knowledge formation that cannot be clearly distinguished from one another. This includes scientific knowledge elements as well as institutionalised, local and partly popular, esoteric and anti-intellectual bodies of knowledge.

Social technology and education

Crisis diagnoses have often led – and continue to lead – to the demand that phenomena labelled as social injustices be overcome through pedagogical action. The social technology and education research strand focuses on educational intervention in schools and extracurricular fields. In the face of crises observed at the time, advocates of social movements (temperance and women’s movements, life reform movements, eugenics, social youth welfare, the 1968 movement) often felt a (morally conditioned) duty to intervene, whereby crises were understood as opportunities for the reconstitution of social structures. The research aims to develop crisis descriptions, variants of crisis management and, above all, propose educational and school-based solutions for crisis management.

Digital editions

A large part of the archive at the Pestalozzianum Research Library has been digitised in recent years. In the coming years, the focus will be on facilitating access to the archival materials and digital editions.

Doctoral theses

Title: From Authoritarian Instructor to Coach? Continuity and Change in Roles, Tasks, and Expectations of Teachers as a result of the “Psycho Boom” in Switzerland (working title)

Doctoral Thesis by: Patricia Janser

Topic: Between 1950 and 1980, psychological and therapeutic forms of knowledge became increasingly important and shaped a wide range of social domains. Against the backdrop of this so-called “Psycho Boom”, this dissertation focuses on the circulation of such knowledge among teachers and its significance for their professional roles. Central to the study is the question of how the entanglement and circulation of psychological knowledge transformed teachers’ tasks, expectations, and notions of authority, suitability, and professionalism and which continuities persisted alongside these changes. At the same time, the project examines the debates, critiques, and conflicts that accompanied this circulation of knowledge. The study is based on a diverse corpus of published and unpublished sources.

Title: Between Authority and Anti-Authority - Discourses on education in and outside school in times of the “Psycho-Boom” in German-speaking Switzerland 1950–1990 (working title)

Doctoral Thesis by: Dana Balmer

Topic: In the mid-20th century, left-wing alternative movements questioned authoritarian education, drawing on new psychological knowledge. However, these developments were not universally welcomed; critical voices saw anti-authoritarian educational methods as a danger that could lead to a lack of orientation among young people. The dissertation engages in with this discourse by examining educational discourses in and outside of school with regard to their ideas of authority and anti-authority. Among other things, it focuses on the question of which patterns of argumentation were used in connection with authority and anti-authority and to what extent newly emerging psychological knowledge served as justification for anti-authoritarian positions. Published and unpublished sources serve as the basis for the investigations.

Project name: “Prerequisites that are essential for good classroom management lie within layers of the soul that are not covered by academic training.” – discourses on teaching as a subject and the reference discipline of pedagogy within Swiss teacher education in around 1970 (completed 2021)

Doctoral thesis by: Tomas Bascio

Topic: in around 1970, German-speaking Switzerland was home to various debates on teacher education. In particular, the discourse on the subject and discipline of pedagogy can be interpreted as a specific discourse on teacher education. Through scientific processes and independent knowledge circulation within teacher circles, which are reflected, for example, in the LEMO expert report (1975) as a central field of discourse, the characteristic ideas of the subject and the discipline are depicted as persistent ideas of pedagogy, which are expressed by the corresponding stakeholders as a specific style of thinking and as obstinate pedagogisation. The persistent ideas are characterised by an independent disciplinary and professional multi-orientation, i.e. by a mixture of psychological, pedagogical-anthropological and normative aspects, by their own metaphorical language and by a particular stance towards professional standards.

Project name: The domestic order of school education. On the practice of caretakers and matrons at Zurich teacher seminaries, 1900–1950 (completed 2020)

Doctoral thesis by: Adrian Juen

Topic: Between 1900 and 1950, numerous caretakers and matrons worked at the Zurich seminaries Küsnacht, Unterstrass and the Höhere Töchterschule with comparable yet diverse working and living practices. Studying these individuals allows new insights into the school cultures of the past. Through their individual, general, practical and discursive actions, these little-studied people express how the physical environment and those present in it, in the interweaving of daily events, shaped school as a significant social organisation.

Cooperation initiatives

Research Library for the History of Education (BBF) at DIPF I Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education, Berlin

The Research Library for the History of Education is a research library with an archive on the history of schools. This comparability of structure and content forms the basis for close cooperation with respect to specialist conferences and the development of offers for specialists in the history of education, which is secured in the long term by a cooperation agreement.

An important component of the cooperation is the biannual research colloquium, which is held alternately in Zurich and Berlin or online. Young academics have a special role to play in this colloquium, and it also offers library staff an opportunity for professional networking. Another field of cooperation is the creation of joint panels at international conferences or the organisation of workshops. This research cooperation – with the participation of the Pestalozzianum Foundation – is complemented by the development of joint guidelines for the publication of indexing data on online portals for the history of education, as well as joint source editions.
