Description

The Swiss education system is undertaking a transformative challenge: the full-scale integration of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into its schools, a critical objective mandated by the Federal Constitution (Art. 2, Art. 54, Art. 73 BV) and the UN Agenda 2030. Achieving this goal requires visionary leadership committed to sustainability and a comprehensive approach to implementation.

In collaboration with Linnaeus University and Éducation 21, an international research project has been launched to support school principals in this endeavour. The project offers targeted expertise and guidance to help principals effectively integrate ESD into their schools. By bringing together specialists in leadership and ESD, as well as school principals from Switzerland and Sweden, the project facilitates leadership peer reviews across schools in both countries.

This collaborative effort is pioneering in its focus on the role of principals in promoting ESD. It will lead to developing innovative quality standards for “sustainable schools” and creating a practice-oriented online toolbox titled “Sustainable Leadership – Designing Sustainable Schools.” The impact of this project extends beyond national borders, setting new benchmarks for the future of education and leaving an imprint on the Swiss educational landscape.
