Description
Successful pedagogical interactions are vital for the cognitive, emotional and social development of pupils, but also for the professional well-being of teachers. A pedagogical interaction encompasses the reciprocal behaviours of teachers and pupils, including their subjective experience of such interactions. Taking this basic understanding as a starting point, the study aim is to identify what conditions promote or hinder successful interactions – from the viewpoint of pupils and teachers, but also from an outside perspective. The research project began in 2024 with a pilot study in 16 secondary school classes in German-speaking Switzerland, in which the instruments and data collection were successfully tested.
The upcoming INTAKT main study (school year 2025/2026) will examine around 100 school classes in a longitudinal study. To assess the quality of the pedagogical interventions from an outside perspective, two regular lessons in the participating classes will be observed; the perspective of teachers and pupils will be ascertained by means of an online survey. The data are then completely anonymised and statistically interpreted.
As thanks for their participation, teachers receive feedback in three formats:
- a personalised report on the quality of interactions in their classes from three perspectives (teacher, pupil, outside);
- a discussion with the study leaders;
- a professional development course to improve the quality of pedagogical interactions (open to the entire teaching staff).
Participating pupils are given the chance to win a prize in a raffle. In-depth analyses are conducted to identify the extent to which the different perspectives coincide or diverge, and how the participants’ behaviours and experiences influence each other over time. The findings will be incorporated in the research discourse as well as in teacher training programmes.
