Description

Kindergarten plays a major role in a child’s socialisation processes and is thus a significant factor in promoting overall healthy development. When attending kindergarten, children should have the opportunity to develop according to their personal potential and interests, independent of rigid gender stereotypes and role models. However, classroom settings and play opportunities often send unconscious messaging that limit a child’s development by assigning certain games and toys to a specific gender. It is therefore all the more important that teachers develop gender-sensitive attitudes and competencies with the aim of broadening the scope of a child’s experience and avoiding gender-related restrictions.

In the project, a handout based on theoretical concepts, empirical studies and reports from the classroom will present ideas on how kindergarten teachers can set up gender-sensitive learning and play spaces. With the help of these suggestions, the participating kindergarten teachers will redesign their classrooms and observe what effects the measures bring about. After three to five months, the teachers will be interviewed to gain deeper insight into the selection, implementation and effect of the suggested measures as well as other ideas gained over the course of the project.

The project is a collaboration between the Zurich University of Teacher Education’s Vice-president’s Office for Teacher Education and the Vice-President’s Office for Research & Development and is funded by the Diversity_Gender Commission and the Centre for Professionalisation and Competence Development.
