- To elaborate, in the context of an international exchange, the meaning and characteristics of fair and authentic assessment and feedback practices based on the latest state of the art.
- To redesign assessment practices towards meaningful tasks which replicate real world challenges, moving away from traditional exams and summative feedback.
- To exchange new assessment and feedback practices with the students in Pristina and Zurich.
Content
The module is offered by the Centre for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education of the PH Zurich and counts for 1.5 ECTS. Mònica Feixas (PH Zurich) teaches the innovative module together with Majlinda Gejlaj and Blerta Perolli (Faculty of Education, University of Pristina, Kosovo).
It focuses on innovative assessment methods that are fair, inclusive and authentic. The use of artificial intelligence tools such as Chat GPT for assessment purposes and the fostering of evaluative judgement are addressed too. In addition, transcultural learning, which is increasingly important in the global world, is promoted through collaboration with colleagues from Kosovo.
"Beyond Exams: Designing authentic Assessment and Feedback Practices" is part of the project “Peer Exchange Network in Teacher Education” (PEER-Net) of the PH Zurich's Department International Project in Education. PEER-Net works with an innovative form of international exchange among teacher training universities. The aim is to expand the international network among universities of teacher education and to promote the global competences of the students and lecturers participating in the project.
The module “Beyond Exams: Designing authentic Assessment and Feedback Practices” includes a two-day visit to the University of Pristina and a two-day visit to one or more universities or colleges in Zurich.
Methodology
The module takes place from February to May 2024. It consists of a presence time of 45 hours (1,5 ECTS). It is divided into two physical meetings, one in Zurich (7-8th March 2024) and one in Pristina (11-12th April 2024), of two days of duration each, and three 2-hour online meetings, one before, one between visits and one at the end of the module.
In the online sessions we will first discuss the concepts of fairness, integrity and authenticity in assessment and feedback and will examine best examples. Based on your own disciplinary context, you will optimize an actual assessment practice or develop a new one to meet quality assessment criteria (including being authentic, inclusive and fair). Providing formative peer-feedback, visiting classrooms and exchanging with students is expected during the two visits to Pristina and Zurich. In the last online session you will reflect your approaches and experiences with feedback and assessment from a transcultural and didactical perspective.
