Goals

In the actual context of higher education in which artificial intelligence tools pose many challenges to the traditional assessment practices, designing authentic tasks and promoting evaluative judgement and self-regulation skills is decisive for preparing students for the workplace. In this online workshop participants will:

  • learn key principles of authentic assessment design and its main components, alongside examples from various disciplines.
  • design step-by-step effective authentic assessment tasks that align with their course goals and learning outcomes
  • include ChatGPT at a certain point of the assessment task
  • define criteria to evaluate the skill of evaluative judgment in authentic tasks using ChatGPT
  • apply previous criteria to assess each other authentic tasks in a peer-feedback format in order to optimise them

Content

  • Definition and characteristics of an authentic assessment task
  • Design an authentic assessment task, including AI-Tools
  • Students' evaluative judgement or the capacity to assess the quality of their own your work and that of others, including that of ChatGPT
  • Criteria to assess evaluative judgement
  • Peer-review of authentic tasks

Methodology

The online hands-on workshop will start with a short input on the definition and characteristics of the concept of authentic assessment and its differences from traditional assessment, and with the concept of evaluative judgement. Next, we will design together and step by step an authentic task for your discipline, based on your course objectives and learning outcomes, which will include the use of ChatGPT. We will jointly define a list of criteria to assess students' evaluative judgement and in small groups you will apply these criteria to the authentic task in order to optimise them for a later use in your course with your students. We will end with sharing experiences from the various disciplinary perspectives and discussing open questions.

Requirements

Good English proficiency is required.

Target Group

The course is aimed at teachers and academic staff at vocational and higher education institutions of any discipline who are interested in designing authentic assessments and aiming to promote evaluative judgement in the actual context of artificial inteligence.
