Programm
Digital innovations are changing society and rebuilding the labour market, but while many professionals are being replaced by technology, teaching is among the careers least likely to be automated. This does not mean that the teaching profession does not have to adapt to today's digital society; on the contrary, teaching professionals must be prepared to provide students with learning experiences that help them integrate effectively into the digital society. However, it is not yet clear whether student teachers are motivated to become teachers in order to contribute to the digital transformation of education, or even whether they perceive themselves as promoters of this change.
This dissertation project aims to better understand what motivates student teachers to become teachers, exploring especially whether these motives are related to the digital transformation of education. For instance, although it has already been seen that one of the main reasons motivating student teachers to become teachers is to bring value to society, it is not known whether student teachers also see the digitalisation of education as a way to do so, or whether this digitalisation motivates them to become teachers.
For the purpose of this research, student teachers in primary and secondary education who are beginning their studies at the Zurich University of Teacher Education (PHZH) or at the University of Zurich (UZH) have been considered. Data on student teachers’ reasons for choosing a teaching career were collected by means of a questionnaire and interviews. Since a mixed-method approach has been followed, in-depth correlational and predictive statistical analysis, as well as thematic analysis have been carried out.
